Description

Discontinued. New Gateway S3 version available now.

This ESP32 based Gateway S32 (Standard Edition V2.0) is the only device you need to add your EMS devices to your home automation system.

Just plug in the device into the service jack on the boiler or heat pump with the optional jack cable and stick it to the side of the boiler.

If your boiler does not have a service jack, you can also use the EMS/thermostat wires in parallel to the thermostat.

No additional cables are needed and everything is powered from the jack itself or from an external 12V power adapter.

The Gateway connects via WiFi to your home network.

Its all neatly packed in a nice and small enclosure (90x50x24mm) that fits into your hand.

(To make a choice between Gateway models look HERE)

Features:

  • Plug-and-play connection to the EMS bus with one cable
  • Connects to the EMS bus via the service jack or the EMS/thermostat wires
  • V2.0 circuit board based on the Espressif ESP32 with 16MB flash
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity
  • EMS-ESP firmware V3
  • Complete responsive webinterface
  • New: English, German, Swedish, Polish and Dutch language selection (more to come)
  • Firmware upgrade via the webinterface
  • Configured for Home Assistant
  • Supports the Home Assistant MQTT Discovery protocol
  • MQTT Discovery now also works with Domoticz without plugin
  • MQTT and Restful API for other interfaces like NodeRED, OpenHAB and Loxone
  • Telnet console
  • Optional DS18B20 temperature sensors
  • Supports all EMS heating circuits
  • Robust third generation BBQKees EMS circuit design with support for EMS, EMS+, Heatronic 3 etc.

Supported EMS device types (See the full list here):

  • Boilers
  • Heat pumps
  • Thermostats
  • Solar modules
  • Mixer modules

Power options:

  • Service jack (with the optional cable)
  • 9-12V DC (with the optionally supplied power adapter)

If your boiler has a service jack you do not need the DC power supply, only the jack cable. If your boiler does not have a service jack, or it does but you want to mount the Gateway elsewhere you need the DC power supply.

You can add your own 12V DC power supply later on but I only support the power supplies that can be ordered with the product.

Do not use cheap audio cables for the service jack as they have very thin wires inside. Only use the optional cable below.

On first boot the Gateway will create an access point on which you can login with a browser and make the appropriate settings for your own network. So for this kit you don’t need any soldering or real programming skills. You do however need to properly configure your home automation system. For Home Assistant, Domoticz and OpenHAB the MQTT discovery is available.

It has an additional connector for directly connecting Dallas 1-wire DS18B20 sensors.

The Gateway can be plugged into the service jack of the boiler, or you can connect it to the EMS bus via the thermostat wires instead. In the latter case you need to use the 12V power supply.

Because the Gateway is an ‘always on’ device it contains high quality components like Panasonic and Murata capacitors for maximum longevity of the device.

Included in the kit:

  • Fully assembled and tested Gateway S32 (Standard edition)
  • Self adhesive strip
  • JST ZH cable for connecting external DS18B20 sensors (sensors not included).
  • Optional: 3,5mm jack cable for the EMS service jack
  • Optional: 2-pole Euro plug power supply with 12VDC output and 5.5mm DC barrel jack connector (center pin positive).
  • Optional: wall mount bracket.

For all details about this product look at the extensive EMS Bus Gateway product Wiki.

Please consult the information pages before purchase.

The Gateway comes fully assembled, tested on an actual EMS boiler and loaded with the EMS-ESP firmware.

You can download the manual here.

The current firmware of the Gateway already supports the long list of these EMS devices.

If your device is not listed, it might very well be fully or partially compatible. In case you are missing parameters, you can always open an issue on the firmware repository to get support.

If you have an old Nefit Ecomline, Buderus GB112 boiler or the control panel on your boiler looks like one of THESE, then your boiler is not EMS based but iRT. The Gateway will not work on iRT boilers nor is there any support in the firmware.

The module works great : nearly Plug n’ Play.
Actually, not fully compatible with my installation, but it’s not a problem from the module itself.

  14. Peter S. (verified owner)

  15. Knut (verified owner)

After my Buderus KM200 broke, I purchased this Gateway. Works like a charm, I needed only 2 hours to replace the programming in FHEM to switch from KM200 to S32.

  16. Steffen Pohl (verified owner)

It did not work right out of the box, the installed fw did not reconnect after a wlan loss. Took me some time to get guided to a beta which solved the problem as far as I can say now. I have not done a comprehensive test so far, connecting a bunch of DS18B20 will be the next step and afterwards controlling the boiler. I am quite optimistic.

  17. Pavel Mrkvan (verified owner)

I had few issues with EMS-ESP (I didn´t see my thermostat at dashboard). Boys on github helped me quickly – Issue #160 – my old boiler is a bit non-standard. After uloading the new version everithing works fine. The connection to the homeassistant went , also well.

Works, easy install (even if you need to disassemble your boiler). Works with old HT3 as well (but you need to handle reset by yourselves, mimicking thermostat behavior sending data every minute or so)

    Software point of view:

Web interface very nice and easy.
Integration with Home Assistant truely simple.

    Hardware point of view:

The JST connector is really small and could be replaced by the same type as the EMS bus terminal to make the connection more reliable.

    Really a good product.

    • hondapower (store manager)

      Thanks for the review.
Indeed the JST connector should ideally be a bit larger but I did not have room to fit a larger one on the PCB next to all the other connectors in the same enclosure.

  34. Philippe Scholtes (verified owner)

I had actually ordered the Gateway S32 and received instead the E32 upgrade. Installation was a little more complicated for me because my boiler did not have a service jack; I had no power socket nearby; I wanted to enclose both EMS Gateway and 12V DC transformer in a neat, waterproof case and; I wanted to use the opportunity of a 12V DC power supply to connect a z-wave device and strengthen the z-wave mesh in that part of the house. It all worked great, thanks to the continuous advice of Kees at BBQKees Electronics

The Gateway S32 unit worked straight away when I connected it to my Worcester Bosch 12I boiler and finally gave me access to the burner stats so I can monitor the gas boiler in Home Assistant. Configuration was very simple and so far the S32 gateway is working great.

The EMS-ESP appears well constructed. Following the instructions, it was easy to get it connected to my boiler (WB Greenstar Heatslave II) and MQTT broker. The extensive information and control afforded by the gateway has allowed me to significantly improve the integration of my central heating system with our home automation platform.

  39. Gauvain (verified owner)

Works out of the box !

  40. Josip T. (verified owner)

Marvelous little device. Ordered it in order to control my Bosch ZWC 24-3 MFA (Heatronic 3) and it worked like a charm.
Next step: When Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 x86 tablet arrives, install Debian on it and run Home Assistant Supervised on it and use it as a wall-mounted controller – for EMS ESP, among other things.

Good quality hardware, good Web Interface, excellent support when installing. The perfect job for my Bosch-Junkers EMS (HT3) based bus. Allowing read and write to all parameters. Mine feeds Home Assistant via MQTT then into Graphana to present data.

  65. Florian (verified owner)

That was easy! Plugged into the service jack of my Buderus GB172-14 and it works like charme. For monitoring it is a perfect solution… Using Iobroker, grafana and influx for this. Editing of some entities does not work as expected, however. But this is maybe related to the GB172-14.

  78. Andrey Orekhov (verified owner)

It is an excellent device, which allows you to control a lot of parameters of the boiler. I am very satisfied with my purchase and I fully recommend it to everyone

Instalation as easy as possible. The device works perfectly.

    OT:
It would be possible to produce, including similar software, a similar device to read pulses from pulse meters (water, gas…) – I think there would be a demand. Thanks

  90. Christian Fuchs (verified owner)

I was sooo impressed by this product and I was sure that it will fit to my gas thermal, that I ordered a bit to fast. I should have read the “non compliant list” 🙂
Setup with WLAN was easy, the web GUI with all the possibilities is excellent and I was impressed again.
Unfortunately my gas thermal is to old and doesn’t speak EMS. But this is solely my fault and that’s why there is no other choice as to rate this product excellent !!

Gateway is hooked to a Logimax 192 and Home Assistant. Now, not only can I begin to understand what triggers the heating, view and record the curves, I also discovered the weather probe is obviously malfunctioning, and have full control on the thermostat. Next steps are “smart” adaptations to match the heating behaviour with presence and proximity !

  98. Marián Velikanič (verified owner)

The product looks very good. Instalation was easy. I have a boiler Buderus Logamax Plus GB062 – 14 with thermostat RC310. (direct conection to connector together with thermostat) I operate this gateway with Home Assistent via MQTT broker. Autodetection works perfectly. Now I can see all sensors in Home Assistant and I can change setup of RC310 (for example, I can change program from Heating to Reduce mode after leaving home, automatically based on another sensor in home Assistant)
